9 Romantic Things To Do in Bali That Don’t Break the Bank

The list of romantic things to do in Bali is endless. We’ve found some to be overpriced and overhyped, but most of the romantic things to do in Bali are surprisingly affordable or free. Here are 9 of our favorites.

(The numbering is just for organization. It doesn’t imply a rank. We enjoyed all these romantic things to do in Bali very much.)

Splash in a Tropical Waterfall – Romantic Things to Do in Bali #1

Tegenungan and Kembar Waterfalls - Romantic Things to Do in Bali, Indonesia

Tegenungan and Kembar Waterfalls

Bali has a number of waterfalls all over the island. Tegenungan (on the right) is a major waterfall close to the main tourist areas of the south. It’s powerful and beautiful, but other tourists and vendor stalls dominate the area. They’re nice falls to visit, but can be less than romantic. For a romantic time, visit one of the smaller and more remote waterfall, like Kembar falls (on the left), near Sambangan village.

Watch the Sunset at a Sea Temple – Romantic Things to Do in Bali #2

Sunset at Uluwatu Temple - Romantic Things to Do in Bali, Indonesia

Sunset on Forbidden Beach near Tanah Lot - Romantic Things to Do in Bali, Indonesia

Sunset on Forbidden Beach near Tanah Lot

The sunsets at Tanah Lot and Uluwatu temples are legendary. They are spectacular, magical, and romantic. But they are also extremely popular. Beware the romance-killing crowds. If a romantic sunset is your priority, you’ll have to escape the crowds by sacrificing the best viewing spots. It just won’t be exactly like the postcard, but your view will still be fantastic.

At Uluwatu, there’s a paved cliff-top walkway that stretches for about a mile. There are many places along the path to get a bit of privacy and still enjoy a beautiful sunset over the dramatic cliffs.

At Tanah Lot, the best sunset view is on the “forbidden” beach under Batu Balong temple. We have a full article on beating the sunset crowds at Tanah Lot here.

Secluded Lunch in the Balinese Countryside – Romantic Things to Do in Bali #3

Batuan Resto in Idyllic Balinese Countryside - Romantic Things to Do in Bali, Indonesia

Batuan Resto in Idyllic Balinese Countryside

The rustic charm of the Balinese countryside is as beautiful and romantic as the beaches. Batuan Resto is one of our favorite rural restaurants. The food is delicious and the setting is breathtaking. The restaurant is set in the middle of rice paddies, and next to a traditional village.

The grounds are like a tropical garden. Batuan Resto is secluded, serene, and very romantic. Best of all, they offer private dining is thatched roof Gazebos surrounded by water.

Parasail Together – Romantic Things to Do in Bali #4

Couples Parasail - Romantic Things to Do in Bali, Indonesia

Couples Parasail

Soar together over Bali’s gorgeous beaches. For a romantic time, a tandem parasail is the ticket. Most of the parasailing on Bali is single rides that take off and land from the beach. These are fun, but they’re only for single riders and go by really fast. A tandem parasail lasts much longer and allows you to enjoy the gorgeous views together.

Volcano View Lunch in Kintamani Village – Romantic Things to Do in Bali #5

Volcano View Lunch in the Clouds - Romantic Things to Do in Bali, Indonesia

Volcano View Lunch in the Clouds

The many restaurants of Kintamani village have some of the best views on Bali. You can enjoy lunch in the clouds with your sweetie AND gaze at 2 gorgeous volcanoes.  It’s actually hard to eat with these jaw-dropping views of Mt. Batur and Mt. Agnung.

Volcanic Mud Bath and Couples Massage – Romantic Things to Do in Bali #6

Hot Volcanic Mud Bath for Two - Romantic Things to Do in Bali, Indonesia

Hot Volcanic Mud Bath for Two

Indulge your senses at one of Bali’s many world-class spas. Want to take your couples massage to the next level? Try a Volcanic mud bath. Many spas offer mud baths featuring fresh, healing mud from the local volcanoes. In Ubud, try Sari Health Resort.

Eat Seafood on Jimbaran Beach – Romantic Things to do in Bali #7

Seafood Dinner on the Sand – Jimbaran Bay - Romantic Things to Do in Bali, Indonesia

Seafood Dinner on the Sand – Jimbaran Bay

Jimbaran Bay is famous for its seafood dinners, served right on the beach. Eating here is one of the most popular things to do in Bali – and for good reason. The natural setting is gorgeous with spectacular sunsets, the sea breeze, and the crashing waves.

There is an astonishing array of seafood, that couldn’t be any fresher. Most of it is caught daily by the local fishermen. Sharing shellfish makes for the most tactile, sensuous, and romantic dinner.

Ride Horses on the Beach – Romantic Things to do in Bali #8

Enjoying the Beach on Horseback - Romantic Things to Do in Bali, Indonesia

Enjoying the Beach on Horseback

Romantic horse rides are available at many of Bali’s beaches. Just make sure to book a private ride not a group ride. Also ask specifically how much time will be actually spent on the beach. Avoid stables far from the beach. If they’re too removed, most of the ride time will be wasted in transit.

Stroll through Rice Terraces – Romantic Things to do in Bali #9

Secluded Jatiluwih Rice Terraces - Romantic Things to Do in Bali, Indonesia

Secluded Jatiluwih Rice Terraces

Bali has some amazing rice terraces. Hiking them is one of the great things to do in Bali, and it can be very romantic too. These terraces have an incredible and inspiring history, but they are also a dreamy and romantic setting for a lover’s stroll.

Tegalalang terraces are beautiful and the most accessible, but they are also the most crowded. The terraces of Jatiluwih have few visitors and are the best bet for a romantic hike.

My husband needs to hurry up and finish school so we can go to Bali. This was actually on my list of places to honeymoon, but because we ended up not having a traditional wedding and it was more spontaneous,, we didn’t end up having time to honeymoon! I hope to visit here some day with him 🙂

Wow, these experiences look so great! I’ve never considered travelling to Bali before although I live not too far away. Mostly because to me Bali is just full of tourists with loud beach parties and so on. But your photos show me a different side of Bali that somehow make me think “Maybe I will go there this year with my partner?” 😀

  • The Travel Ninjas
    Posted at 09:33h, 09 January

Hi Fiona. There are many sides to Bali. It’s not all beach parties. It’s actually very east to avoid the parties if you want. There are so many different types of hotels and they’re in so many different types of locations. You can stay on a mountain, or rice fields, or a beach, and so on. And you can have lots of different experiences – many of them romantic.

My favorite thing about this post is the emphasis on having a great time without going broke – and finding romantic places to get away and enjoy something beautiful without worrying about dollar signs. I think so often, we’re taught that “travel” means “expensive” – and it’s nice to be reminded that that’s not always the case.

  • The Travel Ninjas

Cool collection, Some of your tips we have also tried at our visit. We even went to have lunch at the volcano – unfortunately there we were not so lucky. We caught a rain we had never experienced before… 🙂

Hi JuliaSan. Oh No, sorry to hear your view was ruined by a big storm. Hope you enjoyed the rest of your time on Bali.

Bali looks like such a romantic place!! You two looks like you had a wonderful time. I would especially enjoy splashing in the tropical Waterfall!

Hi Wanderlust Vegans. Hope you get a chance to splash around in Bali’s falls. It’s so fun and romantic.

I have spent six months in Bali and absolutely loved it. You have a great list. I saw many couples riding horses on the beach, seemed like a popular choice. Also watching the sunset from the temple is beautiful and definitely won’t break the bank 🙂

Bali seems like the perfect place for romance and your list is spot on. I lived in Asia for 7 years but never traveled to Bali because I was always “waiting for that perfect romantic moment.” Still waiting…sigh. haha

Hi EG III. Yeah with so many awesome places in Asia, you can’t see them all.

Been to Bali myself as a solo traveler… the place is very crowded so it’s great to see you were able to come up with tips for a romantic quiet getaways. Love the volcano view of Kinatamani. I’d go there solo or otherwise as a hiker 🙂

Hi Brown Gal Trekker. Parts of Bali can get very crowded, but there are ways to cope and ways to avoid for a romantic time.

Lovely list of things to do together with your partner. My personal fav in Bali are the Sunsets of the temples….Tanah Lot in particular. I even would recommend a trip to many of their islands for some snorkeling and diving …something you can do together.

Hi Ami. That’s true there’s some fantastic islands nearby.
